AR in learning and education

In this article, we’d like to take a look at why Augmented Reality (AR) is the upcoming tech trend in education and how it will transform the classroom experience of the future.

An example of how AR can be used in education

No special equipment required

This is a major advantage of AR over Virtual Reality (VR). There is no special equipment like VR headsets or motion controllers required. Since the vast majority of teens is already owning a smartphone and practically all university students, accessibility is not an issue.

AR improves student engagement

AR makes classes more immersive and interactive. Students tend to forget that they are in a class while interacting effortlessly with the learning materials.

AR is very accessible

There is no limitation when it comes to places or the availability of learning materials. Since everything, starting from 3D models, is available online at no or little cost, physical books will become less important, which takes away shipping and the negative environmental impact that is connected with physical learning materials.

AR improves learning

AR is very good at illustrating complex coherences through visualization. Seeing something with your own eyes beats any textbook, no matter how good it might be.

Applicable to any level of education

Augmented Reality can be used from kindergarten all the way to university education and even beyond. There are companies that use AR even for the onboarding of new employees.

Conclusion

Besides all these advantages, there are a few things that need to be considered. Even though AR-ready hardware is getting cheaper by the day, there will still be students that do not have access to it. For the time being, institutions might still have to keep a number of AR-ready devices available in case students can’t access AR experiences with their own devices.

Only educators that are probably trained with this new technology will be able to harvest the full potential of this new technology. The key to the classroom of the future is being held by the teachers that master this technology.
