From Web2D to Web3D for AR glasses with Onirix

The data speaks for itself. More than 20 million Meta Quests sold, 200,000 Apple Vision Pro in its first week on the market, and the demand for augmented reality glasses continues to grow.

According to Statista, 9.54 million shipments of such devices were recorded in the consumer market in 2021. In 2026, 30.88 million units are expected to be reached.

The market is crying out for you to face the natural transition of your website into the Space Computing era as soon as possible.

Your Web2D is boring

When you put on a pair of mixed reality glasses or viewer and use the Quest or Apple Vision Pro browser, you quickly realize what a missed opportunity it is. Why am I scrolling through a flat web instead of having a shopping process closer to the store?

This difference between what you expect and what you get is clearest in eCommerce but applies to other industries as well, where the use of space and 3D objects could provide real differentiation with value versus the flat screen experience.

Your Web2D looks boring to the end user. You are missing an opportunity to better convey your brand’s discourse, to get more engagement from the user and to convince him, in short, to make the final purchase if there is such a possibility.

AR glasses are here

The AR glasses market has received this year a seal of approval called Apple. The recent arrival of the Apple Vision Pro has marked a before and after, with a more professional and productive approach than that of the category leader: Meta.

Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality… or, as Apple has now decided, Spatial Computing. But the bottom line is the same: we are heading towards a future in which content consumption will transition from flat screens to the user’s three-dimensional space, in which real and digital objects will converge at the same time to improve the user’s quality of life and entertainment.

We are talking about a market of glasses or headsets divided between people under 34 years old (47%) and people between 35-54 years old (47%), with a rising market of the 55-64 years old group that already reaches 6%.

And, although by the end of 2022 more than 70% of them were using it for gaming, other segments such as movie watching (42%) or web browsing (29%) were already on the rise. This behavior will be further reflected in this year’s analytics with the arrival of the Quest 3 color mixed reality and the recent release of the Apple Vision Pro.

In fact, Meta’s CTO stated that the Quest 3 browser was one of the biggest surprises of the device, calling it the true “killer app” of the viewer:

“People just using the browser while in mixed reality is hugely popular on the Quest 3. The browser is popular on Quest 2, don’t get me wrong. But it’s a really big noticeable difference on Quest 3, when people are in color pass-through using the browser.”

How can you transition from traditional Web2D to the new Web3D paradigm?

We explain it in three steps.

First step: 3D objects

The most obvious first step would be to have the ability to view 3D objects and preview them in augmented reality.

With Onirix, this is possible for both the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest ecosystems. In this way, using our technology you will be able to:

  • Be compatible with iOS and Android: for a 3D model to be displayed on iOS devices in augmented reality, it must be in USDZ format. This conversion is performed by Onirix when you upload any 3D file.
  • Optimize the visualization: for a 3D model to be displayed smoothly on mobile devices and viewers, certain optimizations need to be applied. Onirix does this process automatically when you upload any model.
  • Achieve optimal performance: Onirix hosting is prepared to serve this type of experiences quickly and cache them efficiently, reducing waiting times.
  • Measure results: Onirix has a metrics system with which you will be able to check the visualizations of the models segmented by date, device, operating system, etc. This will undoubtedly give you relevant information about the use by your potential customers.
  • Centralize the entire AR experience from a single platform: from a single project you can subsequently visualize objects on cell phones, tablets, AR glasses and even computers and touch screens in 3D version.

Second step: interactive RA

The next step would be to turn this model into an advanced interactive experience. Think for example about including various animations, labels with additional information, interaction with the model to see its different components, etc.

With Onirix, you will be able to program all these features from our online tool in a simple way and without even touching code. They will automatically become available on all devices with a browser.

Want to touch code to include more advanced functionalities in your AR experiences? Onirix has an HTML, CSS and JS editor for this; or you can even use our SDK directly if you prefer not to use our platform.

This second step is not yet enabled on Apple Vision Pro, waiting for Apple to enable WebXR in Safari for augmented reality experiences. But you will be able to test it in the Quest browser and, as soon as Apple launches this functionality, your website will be ready for it without the need to invest in additional development.

Third step: immersive experiences

What if you visualize your immersive web in all its splendor?

At Onirix, we believe that the future will not be about continually switching between a Web2D and 3D experience. The user must be able to see a website in a fluid way, with 3D objects, 2D information screens, interactions… all part of a continuous experience.

Think of an online store where you land on the star product, being able to switch from one product to another from a 3D gallery or view additional information and buy with a simple button on top of the object.

That’s what Onirix technology allows you to do. A fully immersive Web3D experience available today for you to face the inevitable. The web as you know it is going to disappear, and the sooner your business adapts to the new reality, the more you will seize the moment and your competitive advantage.

And all this with a return on investment right from the start, not only for Meta Quest 3, but also to improve the user experience on massive devices such as smartphones.
